Chatra woman set on fire during land possession row, suffers 70% burns

Hazaribag: A woman suffered over 70% burn injuries after she was set on fire during a confrontation between local residents and an administrative team sent to facilitate possession of a disputed plot near Keshri Chowk in Chatra town on Wednesday. Two have been detained for interrogation, police said.ASI Praveen Kumar of the Chatra sadar police station said, “The police and administrative team reached the spot with the circle officer to facilitate possession of the piece of land. However, people living at the site and others opposed the move. A man, identified as Karan Kumar, arrived with petrol and began sprinkling it on people. Another Raj Yadav lit a matchstick in which Reena Devi (50), wife of late Naresh Prasad Kasera, caught fire. Reena’s son Dheeraj Kumar (23) and I sustained burn injuries while trying to save her.”The injured were taken to the Chatra sadar hospital. Dr Anna Anjum said, “Reena Devi was given primary treatment and referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), Ranchi.”Deputy superintendent of the Chatra Sadar Hospital, Dr Manish Lal, said, “Her condition was critical, with burns on more than 70% of her body. The other two are undergoing treatment at the Sadar Hospital.”Family members of Reena claimed they have been living at the site for around 100 years. The team arrived without prior notice. Pradeep Swami, a resident of Marwari locality, was also trying to take over the land using allegedly forged documents, they further claimed.SDPO Sunny Vardhan said, “The matter is under investigation. Two persons have been detained for interrogation.”
