Coal ‘theft’ at rly siding raises security, safety concerns
A purported video of the illegal activity went viral on Thursday

Dhanbad: Large-scale coal theft allegedly carried out in broad daylight at the Kesargarh railway siding has brought to light alleged security lapses and triggered serious concerns over safety and accountability.Witnesses claimed that a large number of men, women and even children can often been seen climbing onto railway wagons and removing coal from stationary rakes. A purported video of the act two days ago went viral on Thursday. The coal was packed into sacks and unloaded in an organised manner. Visuals show individuals standing atop coal-laden wagons, collecting and transporting the material without any visible resistance.Neither CISF personnel nor any other security agency was seen at the location, raising questions about surveillance mechanisms.Attempts to contact BCCL chairman-cum-managing director Manoj Agarwal and the CISF DIG went unanswered. However, BCCL public relations officer Abhishek Mishra said the area does not fall under the company’s jurisdiction and is under the railways. “Responsibility for security at the site rests with the railway authorities,” he said.Railway officials, however, refused to comment on the alleged lapse or clarify the security arrangement. RPF superintendent Moomal Rajpurohit said she was unaware of the incident and would respond only after an inquiry. The individuals were climbing wagons just a few feet below a 25,000 V overhead wire, posing a severe hazard.
