Patna: Computer education will soon become mandatory in Bihar schools as the state govt accelerates its push towards digital governance and technology-driven development, CM Samrat Choudhary said on Thursday while addressing an artificial intelligence (AI) sensitisation programme organised by the information technology department.Later, education minister Mithilesh Tiwari told reporters that computer education would be compulsory for students from Classes VI to XII.Samrat said computer education was already being imparted in schools across districts but needed to be expanded to meet the demands of the digital age. He also announced that an Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science university was being established in Muzaffarpur.The CM launched the Project Monitoring System (PMIS) portal for implementing the Chief Minister Area Development Scheme and addressed an orientation programme on AI for legislators.Highlighting the growing role of technology, Samrat urged ministers and legislators to appoint only digitally skilled private assistants and make effective use of social media to stay connected with the public.“AI and digital technology can significantly enhance the capabilities of legislators. Bihar is the mother of democracy, and modern technology can further strengthen democratic governance,” he said.The CM called for regular training in AI, computers and social media for ministers, legislators, block-level officials and their staff to help them keep pace with technological changes and improve public service delivery.He said AI should also be used while preparing estimates for development projects. “An AI-based review of an estimate prepared by the building construction department resulted in a cost saving of 5 to 7%. In today’s digital era, failing to use AI means falling behind in the race for development,” he said.Samrat said the state govt was already using AI to manage ‘Sahyog Shivirs’, issue ration cards to one crore eligible beneficiaries and conduct a digital survey to link 60 lakh farmers with digital IDs. He urged public representatives to use technology-based monitoring systems to ensure effective implementation of welfare schemes.Bihar legislative assembly Speaker Prem Kumar said such orientation programmes would help legislators stay updated on governance, development initiatives and the utilisation of MLA funds. The event was attended by deputy CM Bijendra Prasad Yadav, legislative council chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh, deputy speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav, ministers, legislators and senior officials.
