Couple from Bangladesh held in Tripura

Agartala: A couple from Bangladesh was taken into custody in South Tripura on Friday night for allegedly entering Indian territory through an unauthorised route and without valid documents.Police reported that Santanu Debnath and his wife, who are from Chattogram in southern Bangladesh, were stopped at Debdaru in Shantirbazar while riding a passenger bus. Their suspicious behavior and failure to provide valid identification led to their detention.Authorities mentioned they had received tips regarding suspicious individuals travelling in the region. Based on this intelligence, police halted the bus and questioned the couple. The couple managed to cross into Indian territory at the Silachari border in the Gomati district and boarded a bus, aiming for a safer location. Their journey was interrupted when police stopped the bus to detain them.A search of their bags uncovered two mobile phones and two Bangladeshi SIM cards, which further supported the suspicions about their nationality.Santanu Debnath said that he and his wife had faced significant difficulties in their home country, which motivated them to seek asylum in India. Debnath recounted that he had learned about an illegal crossing during a college outing near the border, specifically at the Matiranga border close to Khagrachari, which influenced his decision to try to enter India.Initial inquiries into the details surrounding their illegal entry into India are ongoing as authorities determine the appropriate actions to take with the case.
