Kolkata: Kolkata Police commissioner Ajay Nand has directed all traffic guards to identify motorists who repeatedly violate traffic rules, signalling a tougher approach towards habitual offenders.“Let us identify repeat offenders… . Three traffic violations and you are out. No licence forever. A lot of countries have this,” Nand said at the concluding programme of Road Safety Week at the Police Training School in Alipore on Sunday. Transport minister Arjun Singh and senior police officers were present.“There have been a lot of complaints about the PVD, and we are discussing how that can be fixed,” Nand said, referring to the existing licensing system, which provides for hearings and action against offenders. “The purpose is only to tell people that if you violate the rules, we will escalate the action. You make one mistake, and then the punishment will increase.”He said repeat offenders should face progressively harsher punishment. “The propensity to commit an offence increases in geometric progression. So, if you do not stop him, he will infect others.” Nand also appealed to young people to follow road-safety rules.Road Safety Week began on Aug 3, but traffic violations and fatal accidents continued. An elderly woman was killed by a private bus in Thakurpukur, while a 65-year-old pedestrian was hit by a motorcycle at Gariahat on Sunday.
