Buxar: The demand for a geographical indication (GI) tag for Buxar’s traditional sweet, popularly known as ‘sone papdi’, is gaining momentum. To press for recognition, members of a social outfit on Friday launched a public awareness campaign, highlighting the sweet’s cultural and economic significance.National convener of the outfit Rajkumar Chaubey said ‘sone papdi’ was not merely a confectionery item but an integral part of the district’s historical and cultural heritage.“Buxar’s ‘sone papdi’ has been associated with the region’s identity for generations. It deserves recognition at both national and international levels, and obtaining a GI tag will help preserve its uniqueness and authenticity,” Chaubey said.Buxar resident K K Ojha said the district was widely known for its religious and historical associations with Lord Ram, Maharshi Vishwamitra and Lord Vamana. He said the famous ‘papdi’ was also part of the area’s identity.
