Bettiah: In a major step toward preserving India’s classical music heritage, rare Dhrupad manuscripts linked to the historic Bettiah Raj have been digitised and made available for public access. The priceless collection, preserved by renowned Dhrupad vocalist Pandit Indra Kishore Mishra, has been uploaded on the Gyan Bharatam app, officials said on Saturday.The manuscripts contain original Dhrupad compositions attributed to the Bettiah Maharaj, offering a glimpse into the rich musical traditions nurtured at the royal court. Scholars note that the Bettiah gharana played a significant role in shaping Dhrupad, one of the oldest and most rigorous forms of Indian classical music, known for its meditative depth, strict discipline and spiritual character.With the digitisation complete, researchers, musicians and music lovers across the country and abroad can now access these rare works without geographical barriers. Experts believe that making such primary sources available online will greatly aid documentation, academic research and the long-term preservation of India’s classical music traditions, many of which face the threat of gradual loss.District art and culture officer Rakesh Kumar said the initiative is aimed at safeguarding the cultural legacy of the region while ensuring wider public participation. He said the Union govt’s Gyan Bharatam Mission is working to identify, survey and digitally document ancient manuscripts across disciplines, particularly those more than 70 years old.Kumar appealed to residents to download the Gyan Bharatam app to view the manuscripts and reconnect with their cultural roots. He also urged people in possession of rare manuscripts or historical documents to share information through the official portal so these materials can be preserved for future generations.
