Kolkata: A 60-year-old woman, Meena Devi Thakur, sustained injuries after being allegedly assaulted by her domestic help, who fled with gold jewellery and cash worth lakhs from her central Kolkata residence. She is undergoing treatment at a nursing home.It had been alleged that she was held hostage by the accused, Sanjay Ghosh, on Friday afternoon. The incident took place on M D Road under the jurisdiction of Jorabagan police station. According to the police and the victim, Meena lived with her husband, Kshetrapal Thakur. Ghosh was in an intoxicated state at the time of the incident. After entering the victim’s house, he had bolted the door. Ghosh picked up a knife from the kitchen and threatened her before turning up the volume of the television.The accused allegedly strangled the woman. He had pressed a pillow on her face. He then took away a gold necklace, weighing around 20gm, that she had put on. He also robbed two gold chains, weighing about 16gm each, and her earrings.The accused allegedly took the keys tied to her waist. He opened the cupboard and stole cash worth around Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000. Before decamping with the valuables, he allegedly threatened to kill her. Later, the neighbours and family members took her to a nearby nursing home. Police recorded her statement. Cops have registered a case against Ghosh. Raids are being conducted to trace and arrest the accused.
