Garhwa: An elephant that strayed from its herd trampled an elderly man to death at Sinjo village in Garhwa district early on Friday, police said. The deceased was identified as Inderdeo Yadav, 75.Police said Yadav stepped out of his home in the morning when the elephant attacked and killed him.Forest ranger Ajay Toppo said, “A sum of Rs 1 lakh as initial compensation was paid to the deceased’s family while the remaining amount will be paid soon.”DFO of Garhwa South, Ebin Benny Abraham, advised people not to venture outside in the dark.Villagers demanded a permanent solution to rampaging elephants, which damage houses and crops and killed residents.On Jan 8 night, Geeta Devi, 50, of a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group, was trampled to death in Chirka village under Chinia police station limits. In another incident, Munna Singh, 30, was killed by elephants at Bahokudar village under Ranka police station limits. On June 26, Mohan Manjhi, 61, was killed and Sardar Manjhi, 40, was injured in Chutru village, where elephants damaged four houses.
