Evening rain brings cheer to city

Chennai: The city was in for a rainy treat on Sunday evening as the humid day ended with showers drenching most parts. The south and western suburbs of Chennai received heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, while the core city witnessed mild showers.Avadi, Pattabiram in the west, Tambaram, Guduvanchery, Chromepet, Velachery in the south witnessed heavy rainfall. According to the rainfall data, Tirunindravur recorded the maximum rainfall of up to 5cm on Sunday, while Kancheepuram recorded 3cm. Taramani recorded 2.6cm till 7.30 pm, while intermittent showers continued till late night in many parts.However, Sunday started bright and sunny with Nungambakkam recording 36.8℃, a slight dip from the normal temperature. Meenambakkam recorded 37℃, at least 1℃ above normal. However, by evening, the breeze brought down the mercury level, and then rain followed.GST Road, CTH Road, and several interior lanes were inundated due to sudden showers, but vehicle movement was largely unaffected. A few flights had to make a delayed landing at Chennai airport as they were made to hover around the skies in the evening.V R Durai, director of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, said a similar temperature pattern will continue till Monday, after which the dry weather will prevail till Thursday. “The showers we experience are due to a trough of easterly and westerly winds 3km above sea level near Chennai coast. The rain will return on Friday,” he said.
