Fake cop threatens to ‘jail’ Mumbai resident for chewing tobacco, extorts Rs 13,000 as ‘penalty’

Mumbai: A man impersonating a police officer extorted Rs 13,000 from Vile Parle resident Manoj Patel by threatening to book him and jail him for three months for chewing tobacco, which is banned by the govt.The Vile Parle police, which registered the case, said the conman flashed an ID card and demanded a Rs 25,000 fine, telling the man he would be behind bars for three months if he did not pay. The conman made the victim withdraw Rs 13,000 from an ATM and hand it to him to avoid action. The incident occurred between 8 am and 8.30 am when Patel (49), was on his way to catch a train.Patel was near Adarsh Petrol Pump on Nehru Road in Vile Parle East when the fraudster, aged approximately 40 to 45 years, approached him on a two-wheeler. On realising something was amiss and that he was deceived by a person impersonating a police officer and showing a fake police ID, Patel approached the Vile Parle police, narrated the entire incident and filed a complaint after returning home from work.
