Final sealing of ammonia leak-hit factory likely today

Chennai: The main gate and outer premises of the seafood facility in Tiruvallur, where an ammonia gas leak claimed 18 lives, may be sealed on Friday.Noting that the inner premises were sealed by revenue officials on Wednesday, collector S Kavitha said the remaining portions of the facility could be sealed only after the effluent disposal process is completed. Tankers containing the ammonia have been sent to Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) in Manali, she told TOI.On Wednesday, five rooms, including the seafood processing unit, the workers’ dormitory, and office rooms, were sealed. Revenue division officer S Ravichandran told reporters that the remaining sewage and tankers need to be cleared before the premises can be sealed. He added that electricity supply to the unit will be cut.After the tragic leak on June 21, authorities began removing ammonia from the facility on June 4. The process continued for four days while the neighborhood was tightly controlled, and industries and warehouses within 300m were shut.Factory owners and the labour agents who recruited the migrant workers have been arrested, and the workers have been sent back to their hometowns in Odisha, Jharkhand, and Assam. Fourteen workers continue to receive care at hospitals.
