Ramgarh: A life-size statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled at Gandhi Chowk on Thursday, with public representatives, officials and residents offering floral tributes.Gandhi had visited Ramgarh in 1940 for the 53rd Congress conference. In 1948, an urn containing his remains was brought here, after which Gandhi Ghat was built and the chowk was named Gandhi Chowk.Hazaribag MP Manish Jaiswal, MLA Mamta Devi, DC Rituraj, SP Mukesh Kumar Lunayat, Cantonment CEO Vivek Kumar Singh, DFO Nitesh Kumar and deputy development commissioner Ashish Agarwal attended the programme.Jaiswal said Gandhi was “not just a person, but an ideology” and urged people to pass on his message of truth and cleanliness to the younger generation. Devi said women and youths should draw inspiration from his ideals of non-violence.Rituraj said the district administration was observing Gandhi Jayanti as Swachhta Sankalp Divas. The SP added, “Harmony and non-violence are as relevant for policing as they were then.”Officials later pledged to uphold truth, non-violence, cleanliness and harmony, and paid tributes at Gandhi Ghat.
