Patna: Bihar govt has identified more than 50 new locations for eco-tourism as part of an ambitious plan to expand nature-based tourism across the state over the next five years. With the proposed additions, the number of eco-tourism destinations is expected to rise to 60-70, tourism minister Kedar Prasad Gupta said on Sunday.The tourism department is prioritising eco-tourism to boost the sector. At present, Bihar has 10-15 active eco-tourism sites, while development is under way at more than 24 major locations, including wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, lakes, waterfalls and hill ranges.“The plan includes development of wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, lakes, waterfalls and hill areas to attract both domestic and international tourists,” Gupta said.Gupta said the initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism, strengthen local economies and protect Bihar’s natural and cultural heritage. The state has also set a target of generating 20 lakh jobs in tourism and allied sectors over the next five years through eco-tourism and related activities.Among the flagship projects is the Valmiki Tiger Reserve in West Champaran, Bihar’s only tiger reserve, known for its Terai forests and rich wildlife. Other major destinations being developed include Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also being considered as the state’s second tiger reserve, Bhim Bandh Wildlife Sanctuary, Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary, Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary and Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary, Asia’s largest freshwater lake.The department is also promoting Rajgir Hills, Kakolat Waterfall, Ghora Katora, Barabar-Gurupa Hills and Surajpur Wetlands as eco-tourism destinations.The govt has fixed timelines for key projects. Facilities such as a glass bridge, souvenir shop, “super tree” structure and an experience centre at Matsyagandha Lake in Saharsa are expected to be completed by 2026, while Lav-Kush Park and the Iconic Tourism Park at Valmiki Nagar are targeted for completion by 2027.At Maa Mundeshwari Dham, the department plans to introduce jungle safaris and other eco-tourism activities. All identified destinations will be equipped with nature trails, watch towers, eco-cottages, homestays, digital signage and interpretation centres.
