US consul general Kathy Giles-Diaz addresses the inaugural session on Wednesday

Ranchi: US consul general in Kolkata, Kathy Giles-Diaz, on Wednesday highlighted the growing threat posed by trafficking networks and called for stronger collaboration.Addressing the inaugural session of ‘Freedom 250: US-India Coordination to Counter Trafficking Threats Conclave’ in Ranchi, she said, “Trafficking, as you all know, is not a vague idea that only affects other people. It goes beyond the movement of people and includes illegal movement of weapons, drugs and money, which harms communities and undermines national security.”She added, “To be clear, trafficking is not a victimless crime. That’s a human perspective and it is a critical one. Trafficking is also a critical national security threat.”Noting the growing sophistication and overlap of criminal networks, she said coordinated responses were critical. Emphasising action-oriented outcomes, Giles-Diaz said, “This conclave is not about just talking together but to work unitedly for impact.”The conclave also featured sessions on investigative models, trafficking syndicates and migration routes, financial intelligence, digital tracking tools and multi-agency coordination frameworks. Experts also shared case studies and best practices to strengthen operational capabilities and enhance cooperation in tackling trafficking-related crimes.
