IPL star Abhishek Porel arrested: What we know about rape case against Delhi Capitals player
Hooghly district police arrested Delhi Capitals batter Abhishek Porel late Monday night.

KOLKATA: Delhi Capitals player Abhishek Porel was arrested by Mogra police in Hooghly late Monday night after the Calcutta high court directed police to arrest him in connection with a rape case filed by a third-year medical student.Porel was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Chinsurah on Tuesday. The court rejected his bail plea and remanded him to three days of police custody.

Who is the complainant?

The complainant is a third-year medical student from Karnataka. According to her complaint filed at Mogra police station on June 23, she first met Porel in January 2023 and they remained in regular contact from April that year.The woman alleged that the two were in a relationship for around three-and-a-half years and that Porel had promised to marry her. She said their families were also involved in discussions about their marriage.The woman’s identity has not been disclosed to protect her privacy in accordance with Supreme Court directives concerning sexual assault cases.

What are the allegations?

The woman has alleged that Porel sexually assaulted her on the promise of marriage.According to her complaint, she went to meet Porel in Delhi on April 2, 2026, where she alleged that she was tortured, isolated and denied food. She was subsequently hospitalised.She also alleged that Porel threatened her and warned that photographs of their intimate moments could be made public. Following this, she approached Mogra police and lodged an FIR.The woman later moved the Calcutta high court, alleging police inaction in the case.

What are the charges?

Police have registered a case against Porel under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 69, which deals with sexual intercourse by deceitful means, including a false promise of marriage, as well as provisions of the Information Technology Act, police sources said.The case is being investigated by Mogra Police Station in Hooghly.

Why was Porel arrested?

The Calcutta high court, in an order dated July 14, directed Bengal Police to arrest Porel and seize his electronic devices.Justice Saugata Bhattacharya ordered the police to seize the devices so that allegedly objectionable material stored on them could not be disseminated.Police had told the court that they had seized a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination. However, Porel had remained at large.Following the court’s direction, Mogra police arrested him late Monday night.Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh confirmed the arrest, saying a case had been registered against Porel and that there was a court order directing his arrest.Porel and his family have not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
