Kolkata: The low-pressure area predicted by IMD formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coast on Thursday. While this system already started bringing showers in the city and other parts of south Bengal from Thursday itself, the Met said there is possibility for heavy rain for the city and other coastal districts as this intensifies.“The low-pressure has formed but currently it is not intense,” said HR Biswas of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata. Showers are likely across south Bengal between July 3 and 6, according to Biswas. The intensity will be more as this system keeps gathering strength gradually. As of now, the chance for heavy rain for Kolkata is on July 5, he added. On Thursday, Kolkata received light to moderate rainfall, with the intensity higher in the southern parts of the city. Areas around Behala received heavy rain for a couple of hours, the Met officials said that the passing shower was due to the low-pressure area. Alipore weather office recorded around 5 mm of rain till late evening. The southwest monsoon flow was on a weak phase after it landed in the city on June 12. While the city logged excess rain in June, the spells of rain were triggered by local cloud development rather than by a monsoon rain-triggering system like a low-pressure area. As a result, the thunderstorm activities were marked by major lightning and thunder strike.
