Magadh varsity to expedite post-retirement benefits

Gaya: Magadh University has decided to fast track disbursement of retirement benefits to its teaching and non-teaching employees.According to MU registrar Binod Kumar Mangalam, to begin with two teachers who got superannuated on Tuesday (June 30) were given their pension related documents including orders for the payment of PF, gratuity and leave encashment. The teachers are PG physics department head Vijay Kumar Verma and Jagjivan College, Gaya, principal Satendra Kumar Parjapati. They will start getting pension from July itself, said the registrar. The pension related documents were handed over to the superannuated teachers by the officiating vice-chancellor Dilip Kumar Kesari. The post-retirement claims of the superannuated employees will be settled on a first-come-first-serve basis, said the registrar. In the past there have been complaints of partisanship in the disbursement of post retirement benefits.Non-payment of post retirement benefits particularly gratuity and leave encashment has been a major source of litigation in the university and if honestly implemented, the decision to fast track post retirement benefit dispersal is likely to significantly reduce the scope of litigation.According to estimates, less than 50% of the existing about 450 teachers are eligible under the regular pension scheme. The remaining teachers appointed by the BPSC and State University Commission after 2005 are covered by a contributory new pension scheme. The cut-off date for the regular pension payment scheme is Sept 1, 2005.Majority of the non-teaching employees are eligible for regular pension as in the recent past very few appointments have been made in this category. Most of the post cut off date appointees in the non-teaching category have been appointed on compassionate ground. The total number of non-teaching employees in the university is estimated to be more than 800.
