MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has cleared the restart of Mumbai Monorail services, bringing the 19.54-km corridor between Chembur and Sant Ghadge Maharaj Chowk a step closer to resuming passenger operations after a nine-month suspension.The approval was conveyed on Monday evening to Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) operating arm. The nod follows the final safety clearance granted by a retired Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on June 3. While all mandatory approvals are now in place, authorities are yet to announce a date for reopening the line and are considering a formal inauguration ceremony.Mumbai Monorail, India’s only operational monorail system, has remained shut since September 20, 2025, following a series of technical glitches that raised safety concerns. Prior to the suspension, the service carried around 18,000 passengers daily, with ridership rising to nearly 20,000 during the monsoon season when disruptions on the Harbour line prompted commuters to seek alternative modes of transport.MMRDA is also planning to improve integration with the metro network by extending Metro Line 2B from Diamond Garden to Chembur Naka, creating an interchange with the monorail.
