New Delhi: Mayor Pravesh Wahi on Tuesday met Union home minister Amit Shah and presented a detailed progress report on MCD’s ongoing efforts to improve sanitation and eliminate the city’s three legacy landfill sites through scientific waste processing and biomining.Giving details on the status of remediation work at Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfill sites, the mayor said MCD was working to make Delhi landfill-free within the stipulated timelines by adopting modern waste management practices and scientific disposal methods.At the Okhla landfill, Wahi said around 30 acres have already been reclaimed through biomining and waste processing out of the total 62-acre site. Nearly 8 million metric tonnes of legacy waste have been scientifically processed, while work is progressing on the treatment of about 1.5 million metric tonnes of fresh waste. He said the civic body is confident of clearing both legacy and fresh waste at the site by Dec 2026.At the Bhalswa landfill, the mayor said nearly 25 acres of the 70-acre site have been reclaimed. The remaining work is progressing as planned, with the civic body targeting complete remediation by Dec 2026. According to the mayor, the reclaimed land will be utilised for public infrastructure and community development, creating new urban spaces and benefiting nearby residents.Wahi also informed Shah that remediation work at the Ghazipur landfill had faced technical and operational challenges, particularly in the disposal of inert material generated during biomining. However, he said the situation improved after NTPC began lifting around 4 million metric tonnes of inert material following directions from the Centre. The move has accelerated waste processing at the site, with MCD now aiming to eliminate the Ghazipur landfill by Dec 2027.The mayor reiterated that MCD remains committed to adopting environmentally sustainable waste management and advanced technologies to transform Delhi into a clean, green and landfill-free city. “Measures to strengthen cleanliness and solid waste management, environmental conservation were discussed,” MCD said.
