MU budget stuck, officiating VC seeks guv’s nod to convene senate meeting

Gaya: Magadh University’s (MU) officiating vice-chancellor Dilip Kumar Kesari has sought governor-cum-chancellor Syed Ata Hasnain’s permission to convene the annual meeting of the senate for the passage of varsity budget for the financial year 2026-27.As on date, the budget has not passed by the senate—the apex decision-making body of the university. As per the provisions of the Bihar State Universities Act, 1976, the senate has the ultimate power in financial and academic matters of the university.Such a situation has arisen on account of the absence of a regular VC in the university. Earlier, the chancellor passed an order limiting the powers of the officiating VCs, who are only authorised to do routine work like salary payment and conduct of day to day functioning of the university. As per the chancellor’s order dated April 28, the officiating VC is not permitted to convene the meetings of senate, syndicate, academic council, selection committee and promotion committee. The order further stated that if extraordinary circumstances require the convening of such meets, the officiating VC will have to seek prior permission from the chancellor.Keshari has stated that the passage of the budget is urgently required for smooth financial management of the university. He said follow up action will be taken when a permission is granted by the chancellor. An advanced copy of the proposed budget has already been sent to the education department, he said. Before convening the senate meeting, meetings of important bodies like the syndicate, academic council and affiliation committee will be held as part of the larger exercise, he added.Expressing concern over issues like delay in the passage of budget and irregular salary payment, MU Teachers’ Association president Sachin Mandilwar said once the university reopens after the summer vacation, he would be convening a general body meeting to discuss these issues.
