MUMBAI: Mumbai woke up to an overcast but largely rain-free Thursday morning after days of relentless monsoon showers, offering residents a brief respite from the heavy rain that had disrupted normal life across the city.Although most parts of the city remained dry during the morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intermittent rainfall later in the day.The IMD has predicted a generally cloudy sky with intermittent light to moderate rain in Mumbai and its suburbs. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places, accompanied by lightning, thunder and occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.According to the BMC, the island city recorded an average of 14.21 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Thursday. The eastern suburbs received 39.37 mm, while the western suburbs recorded 28.85 mm.The civic body said there was a high tide of 3.49 metres at 7 am.The next high tide is expected at 6.09 pm at 3.62 metres, while a low tide is forecast at 12.29 pm at 2.32 metres. The brief dry spell came after several days of heavy rain that triggered waterlogging, uprooted trees, traffic congestion and disruption to suburban rail services across Mumbai.Officials said public transport services, including suburban local trains, Metro services and BEST buses, are operating normally. However, several commuters reported that suburban trains were running 5-10 minutes behind schedule.According to Western Railway officials, there is no waterlogging between Vasai Road and Virar, a stretch that witnessed intense rainfall over the past few days.
