200-yr-old lighthouse in Puducherry renovated, inaugurated

Puducherry: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the renovated old lighthouse, a prominent heritage landmark of Puducherry, in the presence of Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan and chief minister N Rangasamy on Thursday. The lighthouse was restored by the office of the commissioner of GST & central excise, Puducherrry. Built by the French in 1836, it is almost 30m tall and can be seen from a distance of up to 24km.The original oil lamps were replaced with electric lights in the first half of the 20th century. However, a new lighthouse was constructed at the outskirts of the town, and the old lighthouse remained as a French technical marvel, inviting tourists far and wide.
