Patna: Bihar Police arrested more than 73,000 accused in July and Aug as part of a statewide special drive against wanted criminals, illegal arms, liquor and narcotic substances, according to a police headquarters report released on Tuesday.The police arrested 36,788 accused in July and 36,932 in Aug. Among them, 1,231 hardcore criminals were nabbed in July and 1,247 in Aug. The drive also led to the arrest of two Maoists in July and five in Aug.The police made 486 murder-related arrests in July and 412 in Aug, while 96 and 47 accused respectively were arrested in cases classified under dacoity. In robbery cases, the figures stood at 171 in July and 158 in Aug. Arrests under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act rose from 244 in July to 314 in Aug.The operation also resulted in the recovery of illegal weapons and explosives. Police seized 409 illegal firearms in July and 349 in Aug, besides 1,825 rounds of ammunition in July and 1,218 in Aug. Five bombs were recovered in July and one in Aug, while the seizure of explosives increased from 4 kg in July to 20 kg in Aug.The police also reported the seizure of cash, foreign currency, gold and silver during the two-month operation. In July, Rs 1.40 crore in cash was recovered along with foreign currency, 172 grams of gold and 190 grams of silver. In Aug, the cash recovery stood at Rs 1.29 crore, with 483 grams of gold and 2.918 kg of silver also seized.The crackdown on narcotics resulted in the seizure of 928.496 grams of heroin in July and 594.642 grams in Aug. Cannabis seizures stood at 3,257.574 kg in July and they increased to 3,725.559 kg in Aug. Police also seized 2,326 vehicles in July and 2,216 in Aug.The drive also targeted illegal liquor. Police seized 3,33,907 litres of illicit liquor in July and 2,86,464 litres in Aug, the report said.
