Ranchi Ring Road set for eco-friendly makeover

Ranchi: A 40-km stretch of the Ranchi Ring Road is set to be transformed into a green mobility zone, complete with dedicated cycle tracks, pedestrian footpaths, and solar-powered infrastructure. The first phase of the beautification drive will span the stretch from the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) in Kanke to Nagri, routing through Sukurhutu and Jhiri.Road construction department secretary Sunil Kumar said, “Under the direction of chief minister Hemant Soren, a comprehensive development plan has been prepared. The core vision is to build dedicated bicycle tracks, pedestrian footpaths, and comfortable resting zones along the Ring Road to promote sustainable urban transit.”Departmental teams are on the ground identifying specific spots for targeted development initiatives. Beyond standard pedestrian amenities, the project places a heavy emphasis on environmental sustainability. The flanking areas will feature a continuous green verge alongside the installation of eco-friendly street lighting powered by integrated solar roofs.“The development will be undertaken in a phased manner. For the launch phase, we are targeting a stretch of at least 15 to 20 kilometres, which will establish the blueprint for the rest of the Ring Road transformation,” Kumar further said. The department has floated a request for proposal (RFP) to secure consultancy services for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR). The DPR is to be prepared within one month of work allocation. Interested engineering firms and urban planning consultancies have to submit their technical and financial bids through the state’s e-procurement portal. The introduction of the green mobility corridor is expected to significantly ease pedestrian and non-motorised transit on the city’s periphery, while transforming the bypass into an eco-friendly landmark for the state capital.
