Rohtas admin to assess Karbandia belt to restart mining activities

Sasaram: The process of reviving stone mining in Rohtas district has gathered pace, with the district administration constituting a special committee to survey the Karbandia mining belt and identify areas where mining operations can be resumed.Rohtas DM Deepak Kumar Mishra said stone mining has remained largely suspended in the district for nearly a decade following state govt decisions aimed at environmental conservation and protection of the region’s hills and natural heritage. He said the administration has now begun groundwork for restarting mining activities in line with the govt’s renewed focus on reviving the sector. The committee, comprising officials from the mining and forest departments as well as the district administration, will conduct a detailed survey of the Karbandia mining area. It will assess technical, environmental and legal aspects before identifying land suitable for mining.Based on the survey findings, the committee will submit a report to the state govt, which will take the final decision on granting permission for mining operations. The move has raised hopes among those associated with the stone industry, many of whom have remained unemployed since mining activities were halted. Stakeholders believe the resumption of mining could generate jobs and provide a boost to the local economy. However, officials said mining operations would be allowed only after obtaining all statutory and environmental clearances.
