Ranchi: Southwest monsoon has begun withdrawing from Jharkhand, officials at the Ranchi office of India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.“Monsoon currents have now withdrawn from the northwestern districts—Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra and Latehar—as well as some central parts of the state, including Ranchi,” Baburaj PP, head of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, said. He further hinted that monsoon’s withdrawal from the state could be delayed by another week.“There may be a delay of around a week in the further withdrawal of the monsoon from the remaining parts of Jharkhand as there could be some rainfall activity during this period,” Baburaj said.Southwest monsoon first entered Jharkhand on Jun 12 and advanced into more parts of the state on Jun 15.IMD attributed the withdrawal to a decline in rainfall activity, cloudiness and relative humidity over the past two days, along with the absence of southwest monsoon conditions and the prevalence of dry northerly winds. These conditions are associated with an anticyclonic circulation over north Gujarat and adjoining southwest Rajasthan at lower-tropospheric levels.

According to IMD, the withdrawal line currently passes through Supaul, Ranchi and Raipur, among other locations. Conditions are expected to become favourable for further withdrawal from most parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha, additional areas of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, and parts of Telangana and north interior Karnataka during the next two to three days.Jharkhand experienced dry weather during the 24 hours till 8.30 am Saturday. The highest maximum temperature of 35.6°C was recorded at Pakur, while Latehar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 17.5°C.The delayed withdrawal means parts of Jharkhand could still receive intermittent rainfall before the monsoon finally exits the state, marking a gradual rather than abrupt end to the 2026 rainy season.
