Patna: A 21-year-old married woman was allegedly pushed into the swollen Kosi River by her relatives in Supaul district late on Tuesday night, but was rescued by a junior engineer and a worker stationed at a river embankment spur.The woman, identified as Asha Kumari of Lakhnipatti in Sadar block, alleged that two relatives lured her out of her house on the pretext of arranging a meeting with her lover before taking her to the Kosi riverbank near Pipra Khurd and pushing her into the river.Asha told police that she was in a relationship with a local youth, but her family opposed the match. About a month ago, she was allegedly forced to marry another man against her wishes. She accused her maternal uncle and brother-in-law of trying to kill her.Junior engineer Chitranjan Kumar and worker Subhash Kumar, who were on night duty at the embankment spur, heard her cries for help. “We had just stepped out of the camp after dinner when we heard a woman shouting for help from the river,” Chitranjan said.Swept away by the strong current, Asha managed to reach an embankment spur and raised an alarm. Responding immediately, the two men rushed towards the river with a torch and spotted her struggling in the water.Subhash jumped into the river and, after a difficult rescue operation, brought her safely to shore. Following the rescue, Chitranjan informed Dial 112. A police team reached the spot and took Asha into protective custody.Assistant sub-inspector Deepak Kumar Singh of Dial 112 said the woman was taken into custody for her safety and senior officials were informed. “We are verifying Asha’s allegations and have launched an investigation into the alleged attempt to murder her,” he said.
