Two women die of snakebite in East Singhbhum

Jamshedpur: Two women died after being bitten by venomous snakes in Dumaria block of East Singhbhum district on Friday, officials said on Saturday.At Bahadurpur village on Friday, 18-year-old Sauravi Sardar was sleeping on the floor of her house when a venomous snake bit her on the neck and the finger of her left hand. Her family rushed her to the Dumaria community health centre (CHC), from where she was referred to MGM Medical College and Hospital. Doctors declared her brought dead.At Besarpahari village, where Nini Mahakud, 28, was sleeping on the floor when a snake bit her on the left hand. After receiving primary treatment at Dumaria CHC, she was referred to MGMMCH but died during treatment.The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination on Saturday. Doctors said that the venom spread rapidly leaving little chance of survival.Dumaria CHC in-charge Dr Parav Majhi said, “Had Sauravi been brought to the CHC immediately, her chances of survival would have been higher. However, Nini’s condition was not serious, but unfortunately, she died.”On the same day, Alpana Devi, 50, of Ichagarh was admitted to MGMMCH after suffering snake bite but prompt medical attention saved her life, said doctors.Earlier, 12-year-old Bharati Sabar of Dumaria and Rohan Mandal, 10, of Kovali, were admitted to MGMMCH after being bitten by snakes on April 23 and April 27, respectively. Both recovered within a week.“There is no shortage of anti-venom in the district. However, people should not delay in taking snakebite victims to hospital,” said civil surgeon Dr Sahir Pall.
