Dumka: A 52-year-old Kanwariya from Uttar Pradesh was killed after being hit by a pickup van near Sahara village under Jarmundi police station limits in Dumka district late Monday night.The deceased, identified as Munna Singh, was a resident of Deoria district in Uttar Pradesh. He had travelled with a group of around a dozen Kanwariyas in a pickup van to offer prayers during the ongoing Shravani pilgrimage.According to officials, the group had performed jalabhishek at the Baba Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar and later at the Baba Basukinath Temple.Around midnight, they had parked their van along the roadside near Sahara village and were preparing to cook food when another speeding van allegedly rammed into Singh, who was standing beside the road.Having sustained critical injuries he was initially taken to the Jarmundi Community Health Centre. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to the hospital.“The inquest is being completed before a post-mortem examination so as to hand over the body to the deceased’s family. Further investigation into the accident is underway.” Said an officer from Town police station.
