Dhanbad: A purported audio clip of a conversation between Dumri MLA Jairam Mahto and Barwadda police station officer in-charge Ravi Kumar has gone viral on social media, triggering a controversy between the legislator and police.In the clip, Mahto is allegedly heard using abusive and objectionable language during a WhatsApp call with Kumar. The conversation was reportedly recorded by the officer on another phone and surfaced online soon afterwards.The row follows an earlier dispute involving Mahto and a mukhiya representative, which was taken to the police station. Police said tensions escalated after the MLA arrived with a large number of supporters. They alleged that some members of the gathering entered the premises, created a ruckus and obstructed official work.Police have registered an FIR against Mahto and nine others on charges including obstructing govt work.Mahto, who arrived in Dhanbad on Tuesday, denied the allegations and claimed the audio had been edited. He said the original conversation lasted about 11 minutes, but only selected portions were circulated to damage his reputation.Acknowledging a heated exchange, Mahto questioned why the full recording had not been released. He accused Kumar of deliberately recording and circulating the conversation to malign him.The MLA also alleged corruption at police stations, claiming that sand-laden vehicles were made to pay Rs 5,000 to pass through certain police station areas.The Jharkhand Police Men’s Association has demanded an apology from Mahto within 24 hours and warned of a phased agitation if he fails to comply.
