200 street food vendors undergo training in safe food practices

Ranchi: With the onset of monsoon raising the risk of food and water-borne diseases, the food safety wing of the health department on Wednesday launched a two-day training programme for around 200 street food vendors in Ranchi to improve hygiene and food handling practices.Officials said inspections and interactions with vendors have often revealed gaps in awareness regarding safe food storage, handling of raw materials, personal hygiene and prevention of contamination. The training, being conducted in four batches, seeks to address these issues and promote safer food practices among vendors who cater to a large section of the city’s population every day.Additional chief medical officer Amarendra Prasad said, “Contaminated food can contribute to the spread of infectious diseases, particularly during the rainy season. Maintain cleanliness and use protective gear such as gloves, aprons and hairnets while preparing and serving food.”Food safety officer Pawan Kumar said, “Street food remains an important source of affordable meals, but inadequate knowledge of food safety standards can lead to lapses that affect consumer health. The objective is to make vendors aware of scientific food handling practices and reduce risks associated with unsafe food.”The training is being organised jointly by the state health department and the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI).
