Kharagpur: A 21-year-old youth died in police custody at Chandrakona police station in West Midnapore on Sunday night, prompting his father to demand a court-ordered probe.Police claimed Rahul Ruidas attempted suicide by hanging himself in a lock-up bathroom. His family alleged he was murdered and demanded action against responsible personnel.Rahul’s father, Bifal Ruidas, filed a petition before Ghatal subdivisional court seeking a full investigation. District superintendent of police Papia Sultana ordered a probe and initiated a departmental inquiry.Officers broke open the bathroom door after Rahul did not come out for 30 minutes and found him hanging near a shower pipe with his trousers. He was taken to hospital, where he died around 11.30pm.Rahul was arrested at Surerhat on Sept 10 for allegedly intending to commit robbery. The autopsy, to be videographed under a magistrate-level inquiry, is expected on Tuesday.
