Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum police arrested 67 people and seized narcotics and illegal firearms during a two-month crackdown under Operation Zero Tolerance, even as a fresh operation yielded 113 kg of marijuana.The special drive, conducted from July 1 to Aug 31, saw the registration of 18 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police arrested 36 people and seized 133.9 kg of ganja and 108.6 grams of brown sugar. All the accused were remanded in judicial custody.Briefing reporters on Tuesday, SP (rural) Shubham Kumar Khandelwal said police intercepted a car at Kaliadanga Chowk under Baharagora police station limits late on Monday and recovered 113 kg of marijuana. The consignment, which police estimated to be worth Rs 90 lakh, was allegedly being transported from Bhubaneswar to Kharagpur.Police arrested the driver, Pinkan Swai, 27, who is suspected to be part of an interstate drug-smuggling network. He was sent to judicial custody.In the parallel crackdown on illegal arms, police registered 10 cases and arrested 31 people. Ten country-made firearms and 15 live cartridges were recovered. Surveillance was also stepped up against people suspected of possessing or trafficking illegal weapons.Police teams screened more than 2,000 people during verification drives at public places across the district. Of them, 787 were released on personal recognisance bonds after verification.Police sources attributed the results to a strengthened intelligence network, which helped teams identify suspects and conduct targeted raids.SSP Ehtesham Waquarib urged residents to share information about illegal activities in their neighbourhoods, saying timely inputs and public cooperation would help police curb crime and maintain law and order.
