Daltonganj: An 81-year-old man was arrested and sent to judicial custody on Wednesday for allegedly killing his son-in-law in Palamu district, claiming he could no longer tolerate the abuse his daughter suffered at her husband’s hands.The accused, Jagdev Bhuiyan, allegedly attacked his son-in-law, Gandhi Bhuiyan, 42, with an axe in Bhikhee forest area on the intervening night of Sept 19 and 20.Gandhi’s brother lodged an FIR at Chhaterpur police station on Sept 20. A case was registered under Section 103 of BNS, which deals with murder.Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, SDPO Prashant Kumar said police arrested Jagdev and recovered the alleged murder weapon based on information provided by him.Police said Gandhi was a chronic alcoholic who frequently assaulted his wife, Nirmala Devi, and allegedly mistreated Jagdev as well. “The accused told us that he was deeply disturbed by the repeated abuse suffered by his daughter,” Kumar said.Police sources said Jagdev allegedly lost control after years of witnessing his daughter’s ordeal and attacked Gandhi with the sharp-edged weapon.Jagdev was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday. Police said he showed little remorse during interrogation and maintained that he had acted after enduring years of humiliation and suffering caused by his son-in-law’s behaviour.
