Patna: A special vigilance court in Patna on Tuesday sentenced sub-inspector Poonam Kumari, formerly posted at Hajipur Town police station, to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 in a corruption case.The case was registered in Nov 2024 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The complainant alleged Poonam demanded Rs 10,000 to send a requisition to the motor vehicles inspector for inspection of a bus belonging to his firm in Vaishali district.Acting on the complaint, a Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) trap team caught Poonam red-handed on Nov 14, 2024, while allegedly accepting the bribe. She was arrested on the spot and the investigation was conducted by DSP Rajesh Ranjan.Additional Director General, SVU, Pankaj Kumar Darad said, “A chargesheet was filed against Poonam under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act after completion of the probe. The trial was conducted in the court of Special Vigilance Judge Atul Kumar Singh, Patna.”The court convicted the accused on June 23 and awarded the sentence on Tuesday. Officials said the conviction sends a strong message against corruption in public service.
