Bhagalpur hospitals set to get new ICU and HDU facilities

Bhagalpur: Critically ill patients in Bhagalpur and 13 neighbouring districts are set to benefit as the upgraded Lok Nayak Jayprakash Narayan Sadar (Model) Hospital (LNJNSH) and the Superspecialty Hospital (SSH) prepare to launch expanded intensive care facilities from July 1, coinciding with Doctors’ Day.LNJNSH will have a 10-bed hybrid intensive care unit (ICU) and high dependency unit (HDU), including two ventilator beds, while SSH, attached to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JLNMC), is preparing to start a 40-bed ICU with ventilator support for critically ill patients.District programme manager (health) Manibhushan said the ICU-HDU facility at LNJNSH was almost ready and would complement the hospital’s integrated indoor and outdoor services, centralised diagnostics, pharmacy and critical care infrastructure.“Processes for appointment of medical experts having expertise in running ICU-HDU are in final stages whereas appointment of para-medical staff including trained nursing staffs have already been appointed,” Manibhushan said.He said critically ill patients would remain under round-the-clock monitoring by specialist doctors, intensivists, trained nurses and paramedics.Explaining the role of the HDU, Manibhushan said, “It is designed for patients who are after the treatment of his/her critical illness become stable but still require close observation, frequent medical interventions or single-organ support care.”He added the HDU would function as a step-down unit for patients recovering from the ICU before they are shifted to general wards, while the expanded facilities would particularly benefit poor patients unable to afford treatment in private hospitals.Meanwhile, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College principal Dr Sandeep Lal chaired a review meeting with hospital superintendent Dr H P Dubey and heads of departments to assess preparations for commissioning the ICU at SSH.
