Patna: A 16-year-old Class XII student was allegedly shot dead by a jilted lover in Samastipur district on Monday after she refused his marriage proposal. The incident took place near Malang Sthan in Tejiya Vishnupur village under Vaini police station area, while she was on her way to school. The victim, identified as Suman Kumari, daughter of Umesh Thakur of Ward 14 in Tejiya Vishnupur village, was a student of Pusa Kasturba Vidyalaya.According to police, Suman was cycling to school when a local youth on a motorcycle began following her. After covering some distance, he allegedly intercepted her, pulled out a pistol and opened fire. She sustained bullet injuries to her neck and chest and collapsed on the spot. The accused fled immediately after the shooting.Locals alerted the police, who recovered four empty cartridges from the spot and sent the body for post-mortem examination. Raids were being conducted to arrest the accused.The killing triggered protests in the area, with villagers blocking the Tajpur-Pusa main road using bamboo barricades. They raised slogans against the police and administration, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.Samastipur SP Arvind Kumar Singh and ASP-cum-Sadar SDPO-I Sanjay Kumar Pandey reached the spot and pacified the protesters, assuring them that the accused would be arrested soon. The victim’s father alleged that the youth had threatened his daughter a day before the murder. “He told her to marry him or he would shoot her. A day later, she was killed on the road,” he said.Suman’s mother, Sangita Devi, alleged that the youth had been harassing and threatening her daughter for several days. “He repeatedly told her that if she did not marry him, he would kill her. He called again last night. We planned to inform her father in the morning, but before that he shot her while she was on her way to school,” she said.The SP said police teams were dispatched to the spot immediately after the incident. “The accused has been identified. An SIT has been formed under ASP-cum-Sadar SDPO-I Sanjay Kumar Pandey to arrest him. Raids are underway,” he said.
