Patna: A musical adaptation of Phanishwar Nath Renu’s classic story ‘Panchlight’ was presented by Dastak, Patna, at House of Variety (HOV) here on Sunday. The production, marked by humour and energetic performances, drew a packed audience.‘Panchlight’ is a simple yet poignant story set in a village, revolving around a powerful kerosene lantern that the villagers believe will bring respect, progress and brightness to their community. However, their inability to operate the lantern leads to a series of humorous situations and social challenges.Director Punj Prakash said the play explores themes of love, unity, forgiveness, self-respect and the importance of every individual in a community.

He said the production presents a picture of village life, showing that true progress comes not from material possessions but from mutual understanding, acceptance and collective effort.“The play also highlights the issue of caste discrimination, a social reality that remains relevant even today. The central theme of the play is the triumph of human talent and practical knowledge over rigid caste pride and social prejudice,” Punj said.An audience said the performance brought back memories of the simplicity and innocence of village life. “The chorus (song) was magical. I wish I could come again and revisit the play with my family,” he said.
