Kolkata: State govt is mulling to build a theme park in the city to honour the legacy of former chief minister Shibu Soren. The foundation stone for the sprawling park is likely to be laid by CM Hemant Soren on his father’s first death anniversary on Aug 4.“The park is proposed to be developed over 35 acres adjacent to Dhurwa dam. A detailed project report for the park is being prepared,” a senior govt official said.“It will house a museum dedicated to the former CM and his statue. That apart, handicrafts from Jharkhand will be displayed. The park will be themed on a traditional tribal village. There will be stalls showcasing traditional delicacies, handloom items and other indigenous products. It will draw tourists and also create employment opportunities,” the official added.When contacted, urban development minister Sudviya Kumar said, “Several ideas are being considered by the govt. Guru ji (Soren) was an icon, and his death anniversary will be observed across the state in a befitting manner.”

Govt sources said a high-level meeting is scheduled on Saturday to discuss the project.Soren died at the age of 81 at a hospital in New Delhi last year. He was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan in June this year.Besides the park, the govt is also planning to theme this year’s Jharkhand Adivasi Mahotsava, held on Aug 8 and 9 each year on the occasion of International Day for the World’s Indigenous Peoples, after the former CM.JMM will organise programmes in Ranchi and all district headquarters on Aug 4. “The main prayer ceremony will be held at Guru ji’s ancestral Nemra village (in Ramgarh district). A 14-feet tall statue will also be commissioned on the occasion,” party central general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said.
