Ranchi: Markets across the city wore a festive look on Sunday as devotees stocked up on fruits, flowers and puja essentials ahead of the first Monday of Shravan, among the busiest days of the holy month at Shiva temples.The surge in demand sent prices of several offerings northwards. Bananas, among the most sought after fruits for puja, sold for Rs 70-80 a dozen against Rs 60 earlier in the week. Apple prices rose by Rs 50-100 per kg, with premium varieties selling for Rs 280-380 per kg. Pomegranates were priced at Rs 150 per 500 grams, vendors said.“Demand has picked up sharply since Saturday as people usually buy fruits a day before Somwari. Bananas are selling the fastest. Prices have increased because arrivals are limited while demand has risen,” said Rajesh Prasad, a fruit seller in Lalpur.The festive buzz extended beyond fruit stalls. Shops selling green glass bangles reported brisk business, while mehndi artists were busy applying intricate designs as women prepared for Monday’s prayers.“Women prefer green bangles and mehndi during Shravan. Business has been good since the weekend, and we expect the biggest rush on Monday morning,” said Sunita Devi, who runs a bangle stall in Upper Bazaar.Pahari Mandir, one of the prominent Shiva shrines in Ranchi, is expected to receive thousands of devotees from early Monday. Authorities have made arrangements for darshan, traffic management and sanitation.The traditional fair at Marsili Pahad in Namkum is also expected to draw large crowds, adding to the festive atmosphere.The price rise, however, did little to dampen the enthusiasm of shoppers, many of whom said they were selecting offerings according to their budgets.“These offerings are an essential part of Somwari worship. Even if prices have increased, people are buying according to their faith,” said shopper Priyanka Sahay.
