Patna: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has given an in-principle assurance of technical support for the establishment of a space gallery and space innovation centre at the Darbhanga Planetarium. The project aims to provide students in north Bihar with advanced opportunities for learning and innovation in space science.In a letter dated Aug 11, 2026, space Commission chairman and department of space secretary V Narayanan said he was pleased to learn about the initiative and appreciated the project aimed at promoting public awareness of space science and technology. The letter was addressed to Darbhanga MP Gopal Ji Thakur, who had proposed the facility on July 27.ISRO headquarters has designated G Harikrishnan, director of Capacity Building and Programme Outreach (CBPO), as the nodal officer for coordination and technical guidance.The proposed facility is expected to be more than a public exhibition space. Academics believe it could provide students and young people in north Bihar with direct exposure to satellite technology, space exploration, astronomy, robotics, remote sensing and emerging technologies.The proposal seeks to transform the Darbhanga Planetarium into a modern space science and innovation centre that would serve as a platform for scientific learning, experimentation, training programmes and innovation-driven activities.For a region known for its rich intellectual and cultural heritage but still striving to expand its footprint in advanced technology, the project could be a game changer. A permanent link with ISRO’s technological ecosystem could help channel the scientific curiosity of Mithila’s youth into research, innovation and career opportunities, said social activist Amit Anand.
