Muzaffarpur: A woman allegedly poisoned her two-and-a-half-year-old son by mixing a suspected poisonous substance in biscuits in Rampur Hari police station area of Minapur block on Thursday evening. The woman also allegedly consumed poison and is undergoing treatment under police supervision at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH).The child, identified as Aryan Kumar, son of Akhilesh Ram of Tengrhanha Uttar Tola, died late Thursday night. The incident came to light on Friday after police received information and reached the hospital.According to the family, Aryan’s father works in Punjab. The child’s grandfather, Kailash Ram, said Akhilesh had married Aarti Kumari around seven years ago and that the couple frequently had disputes. He said Aarti had gone to her parent’s home around 15 days ago and returned on Wednesday evening.According to the family, Aarti allegedly mixed a suspected poisonous substance in biscuits and fed them to Aryan on Thursday while other family members were away at work. The child’s condition deteriorated soon afterwards. His cries alerted neighbours, who rushed him for treatment, but he died later that night.Police reached the spot and launched an investigation. A forensic team was called to collect evidence and samples from the place. The child’s body was handed over to the family after the postmortem at the SKMCH.Rampur Hari SHO Anjali Kumari said the preliminary investigation suggested that the child may have died after consuming a poisonous substance. She said police had detained the woman and were taking her to the police station, but when her health deteriorated she was taken to the SKMCH, where doctors found that she had also consumed a poisonous substance.“The woman is currently undergoing treatment at the SKMCH under police surveillance,” the SHO said.Police said the circumstances surrounding the incident and the reason for the alleged poisoning were being investigated. The exact cause of the child’s death will be established after the postmortem and forensic examination reports come.The SHO said further legal action would be taken after the family submits a written complaint. Police are also investigating the reported marital disputes and the circumstances surrounding the woman’s return from her parental home a day before the incident.
