Mumbai: A 26-year-old worker’s fatal electrocution from an exposed halogen wire at a construction site in Mulund East led to Navghar police registering a case against the contractor for alleged negligence and failure to provide safety equipment to workers.The deceased, Sahjahan Ali, was employed at the site near Sambhaji Garden for about a month.According to the police, on August 12, when Ali and other workers were engaged in construction work, around 8.15pm, he came into contact with an exposed electrical wire connected to a halogen light and suffered an electric shock. The wire was allegedly damaged, with portions of the electrical conductor exposed.Co-workers rushed him to a nearby hospital by autorickshaw, where doctors declared him dead before treatment. His body was later sent to Rajawadi Hospital for post-mortem examination. The medical officer attributed the cause of death to electrocution.Police conducted a spot panchnama and seized the damaged electrical wire from the site and recorded the statements of several workers during the inquiry.Co-workers told police that the contractor, Mohammad Azhar Ali (42), allegedly failed to provide them with basic safety equipment, such as rubber gloves and protective footwear. Police also alleged that workers were made to continue construction work until late at night under halogen lights and that the contractor was not present at the site when the incident occurred.Navghar police have registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 106(1) for causing death through a rash or negligent act that does not amount to culpable homicide, as well as the Electricity Act, 2003.
