New Delhi: Police arrested 193 people and registered 154 cases during a 72-hour crackdown under Operation Chakra conducted across various areas of north Delhi last week.The operation, carried out from Aug 24 to 27, focused on cases related to illicit liquor, drug peddling, illegal possession of arms and gambling. Police teams from different police stations and units were deployed at several locations for checking, patrolling and surveillance during the drive.According to police, 63 people were arrested under Excise Act and 10,122 quarter bottles of illicit liquor were seized. A car allegedly used to transport the liquor was also recovered. Police said preliminary investigation indicated that the liquor was being brought from neighbouring states for distribution in Delhi.Under NDPS Act, 21 people were arrested and police seized 1.9 kg of ganja, 39.2 gm of heroin, 544 gm of charas, 240 buprenorphine tablets and 500 avil injections.

DCP (north) Niharika Bhatt said, “The operation involved increased checking and patrolling at strategic locations, along with surveillance to identify people allegedly involved in criminal activities.”Police also registered 22 cases under Arms Act and arrested 22 people. The seizures included three country-made pistols, two live cartridges and 22 knives. Four stolen two-wheelers were also recovered.The action against gambling led to 50 cases being registered and 87 people being arrested. Police seized Rs 1.6 lakh in alleged stake money, two mobile phones and playing cards during raids at different locations.Police said the operation was part of its efforts to identify repeat offenders and curb street crime and other offences in the district. Police are continuing to investigate the cases registered during the drive.
