Six arrested in cyber fraud, mobile snatching cases in Jamtara

Dumka: Six persons were arrested in separate cyber fraud and mobile snatching cases as part of a crackdown on cybercrime and street offences in Jamtara district, police said on Sunday.The arrests included four suspected cybercriminals and two men allegedly involved in mobile snatching. Sub-divisional police officer Wasim Raza said surveillance and vehicle checks had been intensified.Acting on a tip-off, police raided the Palash forest along the Sakalpur-Gopalpur road under Karmatanr police station limits on Saturday evening. They arrested Farooq Ansari, 25, Samsuddin Ansari, 30, Jani Babu, 22, and Kaleem Ansari, 24.Police recovered eight mobile phones, 10 SIM cards and a motorcycle from them.Police said the suspects contacted people on the pretext of helping them activate a banking app. They allegedly persuaded victims to use WhatsApp and screen-sharing applications, enabling them to view mobile screens and obtain banking details, including user IDs, passwords and one-time passwords. The stolen credentials were then allegedly used to transfer money through net banking.“Cybercriminals are adopting new methods to gain access to people’s banking credentials. We are examining the digital evidence to identify their wider network,” Raza said.In a separate operation, police arrested Rahul Singh and Dinesh Das, both in their mid-20s, in connection with a mobile snatching incident reported on Aug 27. The two are residents of Piersol under Chitra police station limits in Deoghar district.They were intercepted near Mission Chowk during a vehicle-checking drive. Police recovered two smartphones and seized a motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.All six accused were remanded in judicial custody. Police said the seized devices and other evidence were being examined to identify possible accomplices.
