23.2kg ganja seized near Nepal border, 2 held

Madhubani: In a crackdown on cross-border narcotics smuggling, Laukaha police arrested two Nepalese nationals and seized 23.2kg of ganja worth about Rs 11.6 lakh, according to a press release issued by the office of SSP Yogendra Kumar on Thursday.Police said they received specific information around 9am on Sept 2 that two men on a black motorcycle were transporting contraband from Nepal into India via the western embankment of the Balan river towards Ekaam.Acting on the tip-off, a police team reached the embankment opposite Madhopur village and laid a trap. Soon, the suspects were spotted approaching from the Nepal side carrying plastic sacks and bags. On noticing the police, they allegedly attempted to flee but were intercepted and arrested. The accused were identified as Mohd Rustam of Maholi in Nepal’s Saptari district and Mohd Mustuf of Lahan in Siraha district, Nepal.During a search, police recovered 23.2kg of ganja concealed in the bags. The motorcycle allegedly used for smuggling and two mobile phones were also seized. During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted to bringing the contraband from Nepal for sale in India, police said.A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act. Both accused have been sent to judicial custody, while further investigation is underway, police said.
