Mandarmani: A 10-year-old boy died and a newlywed couple went missing after they were swept away by strong currents while bathing in the sea near Mandarmani’s Mohana area on Monday afternoon, police said.Lifeguards rescued the boy, Somnath Haldar, but doctors at Balisai Rural Hospital declared him dead on arrival.Somnath, originally from Krishnaganj in Nadia district, had been living in Digha with his family. His father, Santu Haldar, works at a hotel in Digha.The missing newlyweds were identified as Suman Seal, 24, and his wife, Brishti Seal, 18, residents of Shantipur in Nadia. Suman, who works in Delhi, had recently arrived in Digha. Brishti’s father also works at a hotel in the town.According to police and local sources, the group travelled from Digha to Mandarmani by e-rickshaw on Monday afternoon. They entered the sea near the Mohana area around 3pm despite rough conditions and were swept into deeper water by strong currents.Mandarmani Coastal Police Station personnel have launched a search operation for the couple. Officials said rough seas and strong tides were hampering the rescue effort.
