Patna: Jamui MLA and minister Shreyasi Singh on Tuesday clarified her remark that “moral policing can be done in a more decent and elegant fashion”, saying a TV channel had quoted her out of context after a video showing a minor girl and her friend being harassed went viral.“They did not release the entire news clip. The point I repeatedly emphasised was that such antisocial elements would not be spared and that the strictest possible action would be taken against them. If you edit a video and quote just a word or two and then want to build a narrative around that, I have no comment on it. I, too, am a daughter of Jamui and Bihar and it is my moral responsibility to stand by every daughter who is fighting such a social battle or contending with such antisocial elements,” said Shreyasi, a former Commonwealth shooting gold medallist.Speaking to a TV channel on Monday, she had described the harassment of a Jamui girl as a “wrong method” of moral policing. “You can have an opinion about how somebody chooses to live their life and what they want to do with it, and maybe, I’m just saying, maybe there is a better way to do it, but the way they’ve been treated is absolutely not tolerable,” she said.RJD national working president Tejashwi Prasad Yadav shared a clip of the interview on X, saying Shreyasi appeared to suggest that “moral policing” should be carried out in a “respectful manner”.The row intensified after police shot one accused in the leg during an encounter. JD(U) Bihar state president Umesh Kushwaha faced criticism on social media for calling the incident a “minor” affair, while Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi linked it to the Yadav caste.
