Adani group to set up Rs 2,500cr health city in New Town

Kolkata: The Adani group will set up a health city in New Town Action Area 2 with an investment of at least Rs 2,500 crore. This will be the third such facility the conglomerate will set up in the country after Mumbai and Ahmedabad.Sources close to Nabanna said the Suvendu Adhikari govt has approved the project, which is likely to be set up in collaboration with Mayo Clinic of the US and will come up on a 51-acre plot that is already with the Adanis.“The ground breaking is expected before the pujas. The initial investment could be Rs 2,500 crore, but it may go up,” said a source. The health city, a not-for-profit initiative, is set to be named Adani Arogya Mandir. The project will include a 1,000-bed superspeciality hospital-cum-medical college, the source said. “It aims to provide healthcare services of international standards and is likely to be developed in technical and knowledge collaboration with Mayo Clinic,” the source said.Mayo Clinic, which has been partnering the Adani group in setting up healthcare facilities in India, is one of the largest integrated, not-for-profit hospitals in the world, with major campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota. The group, known for its top-quality care and cutting-edge research, has a presence in the UK, too.Sources said half the beds in the superspeciality hospital will be reserved for patients who will avail of free treatment. The hospital will offer advanced robotic surgeries and feature an IT-enabled smart hospital management system. “The idea is to create a world-class facility so people here do not have to go to other states for treatment,” said a source. “The project seeks to fill systemic gaps rather than compete with existing hospitals.Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari reportedly mentioned the project at a meeting with secretaries of various departments at Nabanna on Thursday.
